Mayors of Doncaster

Over the last few months, a question that has been asked of me quite alot is, “where do I find a list of the Mayors of Doncaster throughout the ages”. Well ask that question no longer as here is a full list of them. From 1368 until 2000 Doncaster had only one Mayor which is what this list is comprised of. From 2000 onwards we have had a Civic Mayor and an Elected Mayor. The current Civic Mayor is Councillor Christine Mills and the current elected Mayor is Ros Jones.

*NB. The group, Read-Old-Wills, have transcribed some of the wills of some of the Mayors in this list. Where there is a will attached to a particular name, that name will appear as a link, (i.e. underlined), click the name to read the will. Some of the Mayors are simply mentioned in wills, I have identified these with a small ‘m’ after the name and linked them too.

Where names are mentioned elsewhere on the site I have placed an (s) after their name and linked them to the appropriate page. And finally, if there is a (p) after the name then click the name to see an image of them.

From 2002 onwards the Civic Mayor is listed first followed by the elected Mayor.

The year given is the year of election and always runs into the following year. E.g. The entry for 1974 – Albert Edward Cammidge would refer to his election year (having been Mayor for 365 days commencing in 1974 and concluding in 1975).

And finally, the list is extremely long so, if you are looking for a specific name you can hold down ‘Ctrl’ while pressing ‘F’ on your keyboard to bring up a search box.

  1. AHA! Found John, the brother of James, Mayor of Doncaster. Here’s an article, and going by this it is more likely that it is definitely a cousinship in my line.

  2. Hi there
You might find this article interesting from one of New Zealand’s digitised newspapers.

    http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=WC19100609.2.5

I have ancestral PAWSON Connections from Yorkshire who came to NZ in 1840 and am just trying to ascertain which John PAWSON [the family loved repeating that name] was his brother. As Doncaster Mayor James PAWSON was supposedly born 1829 that makes the closest bet my GGG uncle John PAWSON born 1834] his brother, however as far as i’m aware all those children came out to NZ with their parents in 1840 [and another sibling was born on the trip to NZ]. Then again…it might just be totally on a cousinship level! I shall have to keep digging :)
    Cheers
    Sarndra

  3. Dr David Bunch

The current Civic Mayor is Cllr Christine Mills from Conisbrough and Denaby ward.

  4. Jennifer Talbot (nee Liversidge)

My mother Winifred Mary Liversidge was the Labour Mayor in 1978 my Sister Mavis was her Mayoress. I have a full scrap book of her term in office of which I am very proud, they did Doncaster proud. I live in South Africa now and miss Donny.

  5. 1940 – Ernest Scargall
I believe the above was the last mayor to be resident in the mansion house.

  7. re John Mawhood (1642)
I am familiar with this entry in The History and Antiquities of Doncaster and Its Vicinity (Edward Miller, Doncaster, 1804, p 174):
“24 September 1643 John Fayram, Alderman, elected Mayor for the residuum of the year following, upon the removal of John Mawhood, late Maior of the same town”; and “He was taken away speedily, lest wickedness should alter his understanding, or deceit beguile his soul”
    - but does anyone know the reason why John Mawhood was displaced as Mayor? I should be very interested to find out!

  8. John Bullocke (1536) was the Mayor who supported the Pilgrimage of Grace against Henry VIII. Anyone know his fate please?
